Packaging Design and Testing Equipment & Capabilities

The LTAD Engineering and Testing facilities are comprised of four separate and secure laboratory rooms covering approximately 17,500 sq. ft. Although similar type testing/crossovers may occur in the labs, they each have a distinct function. Testing equipment is continually being upgraded to maintain a competitive edge and state-of-the-art capabilities. Recently, LTAD began incorporating 3-D solid modeling and simulation software to augment our physical testing capabilities. Our equipment provides a wide range of capabilities, and is not limited to just testing packaging materials. We have the ability to use the equipment for environmental and climatic exposure of military equipment and items in accordance with MIL-STD-810. The entire LTAD facility is equipped with a redundant, dual air compressor setup which supplies the labs with pressurized air for various pieces of equipment and direct testing. There are several water filtration systems for supplying equipment and direct testing needs. Each lab is located in low traffic, secure areas which offer controlled environmental conditions. All testing and evaluation processes are conducted in accordance with the current applicable controlling documents and relevant military and industry standards/methods. In addition to the packaging and materials testing available, PSCC also provides consulting services and training.

For large containers which exceed indoor applications and are intended for solid or liquid lading, LTAD is equipped with a large outdoor drop area located directly across the street from the main lab. Its close proximity and easy access allows for drop testing of oversized containers using most materials handling equipment (from small forklifts to large capacity cranes) and rapid testing of items removed from controlled environments, in cases such as cold conditioned plastic containers. The area is also equipped with a catch basin for liquid test contents. The main container lab is outfitted with a full array of equipment for the fabrication of fiberboard, wood, and metal packages and components. Included are multiple tools for the testing and fabrication of heat sealing applications. LTAD’s facility is also large enough to conduct fork lift truck transport courses compliant with the requirements of ASTM D4169 and ISTA.

For those evaluations that LTAD cannot perform directly on-site, partnerships have been forged with other government facilities which allow us to fully support almost any test plan.
